<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">A lot of people
associate pregnancy with a joyous experience in which new life is being brought
into the world. There are terms
such as “pregnancy glow” or “miracle of childbirth” that lead us as a society
to presume pregnant women are happy, excited, and blissful. This is not always the case. Pregnancy can be very stressful,
uncomfortable, and scary. And for
first-time expectant mothers, the body experiences drastic changes that
inevitably affect daily functioning.

www.KickFear.com

To begin, if you are a teenager reading this, I commend you. That means that you have enough initiative and curiosity to google terms such as “social anxiety” or “social phobia.” It also probably means that you are anxious and preoccupied with how you appear in social situations or what others think of you. I am hypothesizing that, to some degree, you are struggling to understand who you are, and it can be exhausting when others around you are experiencing the exact same thing. Sure, the easiest solution would be to “fit in” or at the very least, to not stand out. But this often leads us to a very lonely and very scary place.

Now, if you are a former teenager and have graduated from adolescence, I want you to think back to those years…what was it like? What sort of feelings came up for you? How did you survive the world of hormonal imbalances, first loves, “frenemies,” acne, controlling parents, and gossip? How did you balance a social life with academics and preparing for what comes after high school? I am guessing it was not easy, and at some point, the world felt uncertain and shaky. Adolescence is a very difficult period and one that must be approached with empathy and awareness. Social anxiety disorders are very common in teenagers and can be easily overlooked or misinterpreted as just being a “teenager.”

So what can one look for when figuring out if you or your teenager struggles with social anxiety?

Here is an extensive and detailed list of symptoms of social anxiety disorder for teenagers:

-Consistent or ongoing fear of situations and interactions involving new people.
-Heightened anxiety in peer interactions and settings.
-Frequent fear of social or performance situations, in which the teenager worries about acting in embarrassing or unacceptable ways.
-Panic attacks or anxiety attacks when thinking about or engaging in social interactions. These attacks include intense anxiety and are often accompanied with heart palpitations, chest pain, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, nausea, trembling, numbness, sweating, and dizziness.
-Avoidance of social situations, such that the teenager isolates, makes excuses, or refuses to engage in social encounters.
-Heightened distress in routine social situations, such as participating in class, starting or maintaining a conversation, or going to a party.
-Hesitance to participate in normal outings or activities, such that the teenager no longer wants to be involved in extracurricular activities, sports, or clubs due to social anxiety.
-Difficulty transitioning from home to school, in that the teenager resists going to school, becomes truant, or has a high number of unexcused absences.
-Difficulty paying attention or concentrating during class, due to a persistent worry of having to participate in discussions or of saying the “wrong thing” and being embarrassed.

It can be challenging to distinguish normal teenage angst from social anxiety disorder. In fact, a lot of teenagers struggling with social anxiety fail to receive proper treatment due to their symptoms being dismissed or attributed to adolescence. Cognitive behavioral therapy with a trained mental health professional can help the teenager learn new skills to reduce anxiety and distress in social situations. The mental health clinicians at The April Center for Anxiety Attack Management have been helping teenagers overcome social anxiety symptoms for many years. I strongly encourage you to reach out, make contact, and begin to take steps toward a happy and healthy life.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Emetophobia is a word that most of us are unlikely to have encountered. Precisely defined, it is the fear of throwing up. Expanded, this can include a fear of vomiting in public, a fear of seeing vomit, a fear of witnessing another person
vomit, or a fear of being nauseated.
Although Emetophobia is not as recognized as, say Agoraphobia or
Claustrophobia, it has been stated by the International Emetophobia Society to
be the fifth most common phobia.
In fact, one article states that a search of the phrase “fear of being sick” discovered nearly 29 million websites. So let’s talk in detail of how this fear of throwing up
develops, the effects it can have on a person, and how it can be treated.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> Emetophobia affects predominantly females,
although it can also be present in males.
It is found more acutely in adolescent populations; however, recent
research has indicated an increase among adult populations as well. Like most phobias, the fear of vomiting
is most likely linked with a traumatic experience (in this case, one of
throwing up). It has also been
connected to a person having witnessed a family member or a friend being sick
or hospitalized.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> A person suffering from Emetophobia can
experience severe limitations in his or her daily life. Similar to Panic disorder, there is a
repetitive cycle that occurs in Emetophobics. First, there is some sort of anxiety trigger related to
vomiting. This could be a friend
getting the flu, watching someone vomit on TV or a feeling of being full after
a meal. This trigger brings up
thoughts of vomiting, and the person begins to “check” his or her body for
signs of nausea, stomachache, etc.
Then the phobia phase takes over and the person engages in behaviors to
rid him or herself of the anxiety.
For instance, they might leave work early or avoid eating to prevent any
chance of throwing up. This cycle
(fear, anticipation, looking for signs of trouble, and chronic avoidance) tends
to characterize the life of an Emetophobic.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> Now, since chronic avoidance is a key element
in the phobia of throwing up, Emetophobics can become severely disabled in
their lives. It is not uncommon

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This

say that an anxiety doctor would require the person in treatment to vomit;
rather, it is intended that the person practice with situations, objects, and
activities that they fear would lead them to throw up. In other words, anxiety treatment would
focus on gradual exposure to that which the person has been avoiding. Anxiety doctors work to reduce the fears associated with vomiting, and re-engage the person in activities that are

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Do you or someone you
know have a fear of driving on freeways?
This is not uncommon. We
turn on the morning news, and we inevitably hear about traffic accidents on
freeways. If you are a resident in
Los Angeles or San Diego, California, freeway driving is equivalent to owning a
cell phone—necessary and efficient.
After all, Los Angeles and San Diego are not known for their public
transportation system. So let’s
talk about freeway anxiety and how to master the strength to get behind the
wheel.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> A fear of freeway driving can derive from many
different situations. I have
worked with numerous patients that developed a phobia of driving on the freeway
after being in car accidents. This
is particularly true when the accident was not their fault. Fear can develop when we feel a loss of
control over ourselves in a situation.
And being rear-ended or side-swiped out of nowhere can induce extreme
anxiety—especially when later attempting to drive that same freeway where the
accident occurred.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> I have also worked with patients whom have
never driven on a freeway and the phobia simply exists due to uncertainty. For these individuals, the terror that
arises when even thinking of driving
on the freeway is debilitating and can result in avoidance to minimize anxious
feelings. Some are able to drive
on local streets; however, many cannot bring themselves to enter the freeway on-ramp
due to the higher rates of speed, plus fear of panic if unable to exit the
freeway should they become too anxious.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> Now, obviously, there are ways to travel
without having to drive. However,
it is generally agreed that the most effective and practical means of
transportation is driving (especially in LA and San Diego). It cuts back on travel time, and it
keeps us from relying on those unpredictable bus routes and schedules. We can load our car with a week’s worth
of groceries rather than being limited to what we can carry in our recyclable
bags. We can be independent and
maintain freedom of choice with regard to our destination at all times. Overall, driving just makes life easier,
more pleasant and enjoyable.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Now how do we overcome a phobia of driving on
the freeway? Or even just driving
anxiety in general? First and
foremost, it is essential to understand the nature of the phobia. What happens
when I think about getting behind the wheel and driving on the freeway or
highway? What are the distorted
thoughts that elicit panic?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> The next step is seeking out treatment. The only proven method for treating
freeway phobia is cognitive-behavioral therapy. Using specific tools and methods, a trained anxiety
specialist can work with you to gradually desensitize your fear of freeway
driving. In addition, the anxiety doctor will systematically expose you to the feared situation, while working
with you to manage the anxiety.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">With driving anxiety treatment, success stories
are consistent when it comes to helping people overcome freeway phobias. It can be so limiting to live in a big
city and not experience the wealth of it due to driving anxiety. I challenge you to take the step to
enrich your life and call The April Center. Let’s help you get your life back!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Asthenophobia, or the
fear of passing out, can often stem from a history of panic attacks or panic
disorder. During a panic attack, a
person experiences heightened anxiety that leads the body to the “fight or
flight” response.
This intense response produces a surge of adrenaline, feelings of
anxiety and panic, and an urge to escape whatever situation is threatening
survival. This reaction can be
useful, if one is faced head-on with a hungry animal that is looking for its
next meal. However, panic attacks
occur out of context—the physical reactions are the same, but the danger is
only perceived as real. Panic attacks are accompanied by other
physical elements, for instance, lightheadedness, dizziness, and weakness. They can also induce a feel of
“faintness” in a person, which causes one to believe they might pass
out.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Research has depicted that the majority of
people who have a fear of fainting have never actually passed out. Let’s take a moment and clarify the
definition of fainting—it is a
sudden, brief loss of consciousness and posture caused by decreased blood flow
to the brain. In people who suffer
from Asthenopobia, anxiety is produced by a fear or a belief of fainting rather
than the actual act of fainting.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> Does this all make sense? People who have a phobia of passing out
fear the experience of passing out.
This phobia is typically developed when one has undergone an
embarrassing fainting episode in public.
It could be panic-induced or from a medical condition such as
anemia. The event might become
solidified in the mind, which leads the person to fear any type of bodily sensation
that is associated with fainting (i.e. dizziness, weakness, or shortness of
breath). The person then avoids
situations that can induce these sensations. In extreme cases, obsessions about passing out may
develop. Asthenophobics tend to
avoid strenuous exercise, public places, and crowds of people. Understandably, this can have a
significant negative impact on one’s life.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> The fear of passing out is attached to the
concern of losing control. I mean,
this makes sense—passing out equates to loss of consciousness, in which state
we do not have control. It is
important to understand that it is the anxiety that causes us to feel that we
are not in control. We do actually
have control. That being said,
let’s move on to treatment.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";"> Anxiety specialists that use Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are the proven treatment choice, as shown in
countless research studies. These
trained anxiety doctors can help you challenge and change ineffective and
destructive thought patterns which lead to feelings of panic and anxiety. CBT also helps reduce the unwanted
feelings while simultaneously building healthy and adaptive coping
mechanisms. Anxiety specialists
can also provide psychoeducation for people who are suffering from
Asthenophobia. This involves distinguishing
between fears and feelings of fainting and the actual physical act of passing
out.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Anxiety is a general feeling of worry and discomfort—you know that shaky, unsettling feeling you get before a big speech or a first date? For some of us, it can be adaptive. If we are faced with a life-threatening situation, the fight-or-flight response in the brain gets activated and we react spontaneously and efficiently. For others, anxiety is a pervasive, debilitating state that our minds and bodies are constantly battling. Anxiety no longer serves a healthy function—rather, it prohibits us from moving forward in different areas of our lives.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Anxiety is not just a feeling—it is literally a state of being. Our bodies change when we become anxious. Heart rate and blood pressure increase, our immune system is affected, and our brain responds by releasing hormones, which activate that fight-or-flight response. The lungs increase the oxygen intake and the scalp tightens so it literally feels like your hair is ‘standing up.’ Another way the body responds to anxiety is that fluids are diverted from the mouth and throat to other more essential areas. This may explain why stress often produces dryness in the mouth and throat. If you pay attention to people giving speeches, they likely sip water frequently to counteract the dryness. In more severe cases, like those who suffer from anxiety disorders, it can even feel like the throat is literally closing up.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Now, the throat closing up can be an extremely terrifying phenomenon. This is true, especially if one is unfamiliar with what is going on and experiencing an anxiety attack for the first time. Throat closure can lead to difficulty breathing and swallowing. It can create shortness of breath and even lead the person to ‘black out.’ Fear of the throat closing up and fear of not being able to swallow is a real issue that affects a lot of people who have anxiety. It is no wonder that more and more people are now developing a phobia of the throat closing up.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Anxiety doctors are very knowledgeable about this sensation. The throat closure phobia is linked to panic symptoms and panic disorders. As mentioned before, that knot-like feeling in the throat or the tightening of the muscles is caused by our body’s reaction to stress. It can also be related to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, in which one engages in repetitive actions to avoid distressing thoughts. A person might constantly clear their throat or cough in order to ensure that their throat is not actually closing up. Whether the phobia of throat closure occurs from panic attacks or OCD, there is a definite need to see an anxiety specialist.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Anxiety doctors help you identify and address your fears and work with you to reduce and eliminate negative feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an anxiety doctor can help you better understand the phobia of the throat closing up and teach you techniques and skills to overcome the fear. CBT tackles not only the throat-closing phobia, but it treats all of the components that comprise an anxiety disorder. CBT is the most effective psychological treatment for anxiety disorders and phobias, as proven in the literature and research.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">As always, it is important that one seek out help as soon as possible in order to conquer anxiety disorders. This is true, especially for those who have a fear of the throat closing up or a fear of not being able to breathe. There are skilled anxiety doctors at the April Center that can help youto overcome your anxiety so that you can live a peaceful and fulfilling life.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman";">All the best,
worry about causing harm or being responsible for harm done to others. Additionally, those with aggressive
obsessions often worry about impulsively hurting someone simply because they
are able. This type of person
generally has no history of violence, nor does he act on his urges. He simply appraises his thoughts as
dangerous so when a random thought involving harm enters his mind, the person
begins to worry. This worry takes
control of the person’s mind, therefore rendering him unable to think or focus
on anything other than harm. The
person does not act on their
thoughts; they simply become consumed by them, which leads to greater distress
and fear.

Do
you or someone you know suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder? OCD can be
one of the most distressing and difficult psychological disorders for both the
patient and the patient’s support system.
That is why getting help for OCD's intrusive thoughts and compulsive
behaviors is so necessary. So
where does one begin? And how does
one know exactly when it is time for
treatment?

According
to the article below (see link)*, we all have our own health barometers that
alert us when something is out of balance. Think of these barometers as signals sent from our body and
mind to inform us that something is not working properly. For people suffering from obsessive
compulsive disorder, those health barometers can be obsessive thoughts and compulsions.

We
are all aware that obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD, is an anxiety
disorder. It is characterized by
recurrent, unwanted thoughts and overwhelming urges to repeat certain rituals
or behaviors in order to control these thoughts. Now, let’s break this down more simply. Say you have a recurring thought of
germs. It is with you at all times—when
you use a public restroom, when you hear someone sneeze across the room, and
even when you are in your own home.
The thought of germs is terrifying—what if you get sick or
infected? Could it lead to your
death? To rid yourself of these
thoughts, you begin to engage in behaviors that may prevent you from getting
sick. You wash your hands repeatedly,
use hand sanitizer after touching anything, and refuse to be around anyone who
appears ill. Slowly, these
behaviors become rituals that rule your day. And this is all done in order to control that original
thought of germs.

That
is the general picture of OCD thought disorder. If not treated properly, it can overrule and overtake
virtually every aspect of a person’s life. Family, friends, work, and school are negatively affected by
the need to control the obsessive thoughts causing a rapid decline in mental,
emotional, and physical health.

Cognitive
behavioral therapy is essential for managing and overcoming OCD thought
disorder. So how do you know when
it’s time for therapy? Ask
yourself this question: Is your experience with OCD affecting your life in any
way? Are you unable to relax
because of some annoying thought that won’t seem to leave your head? Are you having difficulty getting
through a normal day because you are trying to control those thoughts by doing
some behavior? If the answer to
any or all of these questions is yes, then it is definitely time to seek out OCD treatment. Specially trained OCD
doctors at The April Center can help you learn to tolerate the anxiety that
comes from the intrusive thoughts, and better control the rituals and behaviors
that have interfered with your life.
They will also help you understand the connection between the thoughts,
behaviors, and feelings, and how to disrupt the vicious cycle that causes so
much distress. Finally, OCD doctors can help you become better attuned to genuine conflicts within body and mind. I know starting treatment can appear scary,
but it far outweighs the misery and anxiety of living with obsessive compulsive
disorder.

mellow, listen-to-Bob Marley, ‘no worries’ type of people. However, research evidence appears to demonstrate that 50% of marijuana smokers in the United
States have experienced a panic reaction on some occasion. Some people seem to use marijuana
to self medicate anxiety symptoms. Others seem to experience
anxiety and panic symptoms from marijuana itself. In both cases, there is a definite link between
marijuana and panic attacks or anxiety attacks. So what can we do about this?

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"> People
who smoke marijuana either socially or as alternative medicine are at serious
risk for panic attacks. This is
problematic, especially for those who are unaware of this knowledge. Panic attacks often occur suddenly
and without warning, and can be extremely debilitating, especially when they happen in a setting, such as school or work.
It may feel like you are going crazy or dying.
These experiences are entirely unpleasant and weed just might
cause these panic attacks to occur.

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"> California
has not joined with Colorado in legalizing the use of marijuana, however this
does not stop people from growing it, distributing it, obtaining it, and
smoking it. I assume that
everyone reading this blog has either tried marijuana or knows someone who has
used it before. These days, it is
almost as commonplace as alcohol, and it is important that awareness be shed on
the adverse effects of the drug.

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"> So
does weed cause panic attacks?
According to research, use of marijuana, weed or pot can definitely cause an acute
anxiety reaction. And this acute
anxiety can lead to panic, in which the user becomes extremely agitated and
even incapacitated. Certain
phobias can develop, such as fears of being in public, or fears of being around
other people. And it seems that
the chance of having panic attacks increase when marijuana is used more
frequently and abundantly.

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%; mso-ascii-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;"> Whether you're a frequent pot smoker or a one time user, following a panic attack, it is highly
recommended that you seek out anxiety treatment. The research has clearly stated a strong link between marijuana and anxiety attacks. Following an initial panic attack, a common struggle is attacks that occur separately from smoking weed. There is no
immunity or specific selection of whom may be susceptible. The best way to prevent panic attacks is by seeking anxiety
treatment to learn strategies for reduction. Anxiety doctors can
work with you and teach you ways to systematically build healthier coping strategies.

social anxiety group is extremely helpful and also may be a first choice treatment option for those suffering with social anxiety.*

I have had the privilege of working
with many people of varying ages and backgrounds who struggle with this complex
fear. I know the debilitating
nature that social anxiety can have over one’s experience at a job, in relationships,
and in life. I also
understand the proverbial loneliness that can pervade one’s existence once
victim to this anxiety disorder. If you or
someone you know suffers from social anxiety, I commend you for reading this. I know this can be really scary, but I
also realize the benefits to overcoming social anxiety far outweigh living a
life of isolation and fear.

So
how do we get there? Recent
research has provided that cognitive-behavioral therapy conducted in a group format
can be valuable in conquering social anxiety disorder. It goes on to specify that group treatment may be more effective than individual treatment for social anxiety in that it allows
people to practice the very interactions of which they are afraid. Researchers also advocate for group
therapy for social anxiety because it is cost effective and efficient. This is not to say that individual
treatment with a social anxiety doctor specialist does not work—it is, in fact, just
as helpful, as depicted in research studies. However, support groups for social anxiety can be a
breakthrough additional treatment to offer those who struggle with fears of
interaction.

Let’s
close our eyes briefly and conjure up an image of what a social anxiety group
might look like. Think of six or seven
other members, all with their own trepidation and fears of social
situations. Anxiety is
high—yes. But judgment is
non-existent. Everyone is too
occupied with their own internal struggles to notice anything about anyone
else. There is a trained anxiety
specialist who is leading the group, gently but confidently providing support
and guidance to help all members reach the shared goal of overcoming social
anxiety. This group meets once a
week, always on the same day and at the same time. There are no surprises. Gradually, the members become familiar with the context and
the environment, and they begin to look to one another for reassurance and
validation. And before you know
it, interactions are occurring without the fear and worry of being judged or
misperceived. It becomes
safe. And eventually the group
members are able to take what is being done in group and apply it to their
personal lives. And that is a
picture of a successful support group for social anxiety.

Could
you imagine it? Was it
difficult? My guess is that while
it may have been scary, it also sparked some glimmer of hope. That maybe this could be the answer to overpowering the fears and heartaches that
comprise social anxiety disorder.

Can OCD Go Away Without It?by Dr. Craig April, Psychologist and Director of The April Center For Anxiety Attack Management - Los Angeles
www.KickFear.com

Can OCD go away or get better without treatment? The simple answer: No. However, I think this question demands a longer response because once the proper techniques are learned, one can then treat themselves.

OCD has two major components: obsessions/compulsions and fear.

Obsessions and compulsions are intertwined. Obsessions are repetitive thoughts that are unreasonable, disturbing in nature and difficult to stop. Compulsions are behaviors or mental rituals designed to reduce anxiety caused by obsessions. In order to reduce obsessions, one must ultimately face fear and anxiety without engaging in compulsions. This is far easier to do with the proper tools and techniques taught by OCD and anxiety doctors or specialists.

That said, OCD and anxiety can wax and wane for long term sufferers. In other words, sometimes it's better, sometimes it's worse. Without treatment though, it's very difficult to free yourself from its grip. Prior to seeking OCD treatment, people try many solitary ways to reduce their anxiety. Some try exercise, yoga, herbs, medication, travel, traditional talk therapy (Freudian mostly), avoidance, alcohol, etc., but all for naught. Sooner or later, they find these attempts to be weak and even useless.

Keep in mind, though many anxiety reduction methods advertised state they can help, this is untrue. The only scientifically proven form of treatment available is CBT. I often say to patients that if hypnosis, acupuncture, medication, and so on resolved anxiety, I would have sought certification in these areas. This explains why we offer CBT at The April Center.

CBT works to reduce OCD symptoms. What matters is how motivated and committed one is to doing the work. If facing fear was simple, no one would struggle with it. And we know that's not the case.

Fear and anxiety are this culture's most common ailments. So do what's required to live a calm, enjoyable life filled with freedom. If you need help, seek OCD and anxiety treatment and break free!

www.KickFear.com

As
I was perusing the web, I came across an interesting article regarding the
famous rapper Eminem and his struggle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder*. The article (link available at bottom) depicted Eminem’s previous
addiction to prescription drugs as a way of repressing compulsive habits and
behaviors. Now sober, Eminem
admitted to realizing things about himself that significantly interfere with
his personal and professional life.

Now
I have to commend Eminem for speaking out about such a private matter. It takes strength to shed light on an
issue that has been long overlooked.
It furthermore takes strength to reach out and seek help for OCD or
other anxiety related-disorders.

Let’s
take a step back and attempt to understand Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Simply defined, OCD is an anxiety
disorder in which people have unwanted and recurring thoughts, feelings, ideas,
or sensations (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the
associated anxiety (compulsions). Obsessions
can be centered on concerns of contamination, losing control, perfectionism,
harm, superstitions, and unwanted sexual thoughts. Compulsive behaviors include washing and cleaning, checking
things, repeating routine activities or body movements, counting, and
collecting. In Eminem’s case, he
stated that he needed to run on the treadmill until he burned a certain number
of calories, or that he would make continuous changes in his music trying to
get it “just right.”

A
person suffering from OCD generally recognizes that their thoughts or behaviors
are irrational or excessive.
However, the anxiety is much too great to simply stop the obsessions or
compulsions from occurring, thus continuing the influx of intrusive thoughts
and actions. This can be
time-consuming and distressing, and interferes with normal life functioning.

Eminem
resorted to using prescription drugs as a way to avoid anxiety and OCD obsessions. Others may use alcohol
or marijuana to escape the anxiety that pervades daily life. Some just seek to ignore the problem
and pretend it doesn’t exist.
Compulsive behaviors like those previously mentioned (hand-washing or
checking things) also serve as temporary escapes from the obsessive thoughts. The problem with all of these methods
is that they are not effective and
they do not get rid of the
anxiety. Avoidance behaviors only
maintain and even increase distress levels and fears. This concept is very important, especially if you are
seeking out help for OCD or other anxiety disorders.

Cognitive-behavioral
therapy (CBT) is the only research proven psychotherapy treatment that is
effective for anxiety treatment.
With CBT, trained anxiety doctors help you to identify triggers that
lead to obsessive thoughts, tolerate anxiety, and resist the urge to act on
compulsions. Furthermore, anxiety
doctors can help you develop healthy coping strategies for stress and
fear.

If
you or someone you know can relate to Eminem’s struggle with OCD, it is
imperative to seek out treatment.
Using maladaptive coping techniques such as drugs or alcohol will only
perpetuate the problem. So
borrowing from Eminem’s words off his album Recovery,
“We’ll walk this world together through the storm…whatever weather, cold or
warm…just lettin’ you know that you’re not alone.”

www.KickFear.com

Support groups for social anxiety can be a curious endeavor to those that don't struggle with this common phobia. For instance, others might wonder how those with social anxiety (also called social phobia) will participate in a support group when this participation speaks to the foundation of their fear. This is a rational consideration. However, there is no cause for concern for a few reasons.

Why Support Groups For Social Anxiety Disorder Are Effective :

1.) All group members are struggling with social interaction and are not engaged in judging one another. This is a significant experience for all, considering that the foundation of social phobia is the fear that others will judge or criticize. Working on this struggle in a welcoming environment has a strong effect.

2.) The group is a setting that creates support and understanding. Because it takes courage to face social anxiety and all that it encompasses, receiving support and understanding is crucial.

3.) The safe group environment provides a forum for those struggling with social anxiety to explore its origins. CBT oriented groups generally don't spend a lot of time on how this phobia was created. However, a safe group environment often evokes curiosity in members, routinely followed by a discussion of how social anxiety develops.

4.) The focus of the group is on breaking free from the grasp of social anxiety and not on unrelated topics. The best social anxiety groups don't waste time talking about issues that are irrelevant to members struggles.

5.) Group members become accountable to themselves, but also to each other to complete homework assignments designed to help them overcome the barriers of social anxiety. Homework then is a key component in the successful treatment of social anxiety.

6.) An experience of camaraderie develops amongst group members who are all sharing in this anxiety therapy process and getting to know one another. This is generally a positive experience for all.

7.) Momentum builds as members begin making progress. This creates further motivation to move beyond social phobia. Members tend to reach their progress goals with a strong level of inertia. The cliche "Seeing is believing" tends to occur here.

8.) CBT oriented social anxiety support groups are technique focused. In other words, group members are taught strategies that address how to manage anxiety symptoms.

All of the above are reasons why social anxiety support groups can be so effective in reducing anxiety and providing relief.

If you struggle with social anxiety, don't hesitate to seek group therapy. Follow the link for more information on The April Center's social anxiety support groups now.
www.KickFear.com

The question "Do family doctors treat anxiety?" is one that deserves a real response. There is a simple answer: "Unfortunately, they think they do." This post is not meant to criticize or judge. However, it is meant to share the truth about a disturbing reality for those struggling with anxiety that seek treatment from their family doctor.

Are you ready? Here is the truth:

Family doctors do not know how to treat anxiety!

I have nothing against family doctors. They provide an extremely valuable and important service for broad illnesses and medical needs. However, they are simply not trained or skilled in diagnosing or treating anxiety disorders, such as Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, phobias, OCD, Hypochondriasis, PTSD, and Generalized Anxiety.

Treating anxiety requires specialized training and experience. It cannot be treated with general knowledge, nor can it be treated like all other medical or mental health issues. Unfortunately, society tends to support the notion that family doctors can treat everything! And although most know that without specialized knowledge, there are many ailments that can't be treated with a cookie cutter approach, most tend to fall into the trap of seeing a family doctor for anxiety treatment.

One interesting observation is that family doctors are willing to refer patients to other medical doctors when more expertise is required. Why not always do the same when facing a patient with anxiety?

Many anxiety sufferers that seek my help have had a long journey prior to discovering my anxiety treatment center. Many initially visited their family doctor for treatment, only to be prescribed Xanax or Ativan (addictive anti-anxiety medications) for anxiety symptoms that could be treated naturally. Meanwhile, their family doctor provided no awareness of diagnosis, no treatment plan, no referral to an actual anxiety doctor (a psychologist specializing in the natural treatment of anxiety disorders) and no offer to monitor tolerance of the medication. Following their poor treatment and possibly adverse reactions to the inappropriately prescribed medication, most patients renewed their search for someone who could actually help them with their anxiety.

I want to be clear. I'm not blaming family doctors. Many are victims of training that tells them that they should be able to treat all of what ails their patients. Some of them, thankfully, have a respect for the limitations of their scope and will refer to a therapist or psychologist. But these are in the minority. Most simply whip out their medication pad and start prescribing. And, ultimately, it's the anxiety sufferer who experiences even more struggle as they then go back to the drawing board (hopefully without another problem - addiction to the meds prescribed!).

For those of you reading, it's probably clear that this is a reality that I find frustrating. But this is why I provide this information. For those suffering with anxiety symptoms and anxiety disorders, I hope to quicken the path towards finding help that can actually reduce and resolve their suffering.

Anxiety Disorders are treatable! But only when one finds the proper treatment!

Many view Agoraphobia as a complicated phobia, due to its tendency to permeate so many aspects of the sufferer's life. In fact, in my field it is labeled as a "complex phobia" as opposed to a "simple phobia". However, it really isn't that complicated or complex, just involved. Recently, I wrote a blog post on what Agoraphobia is about, in addition to its typical symptoms. If interested, it's entitled Agoraphobia, Panic Attacks and You. In this post, however, I'll be focusing on treatment.

CBT for Agoraphobia is the key form of treatment and the only one that is research proven. Unfortunately, rather than receiving phobia treatment from an anxiety doctor or specialist who can provide it, many with this phobia are still wasting time with traditional therapy that has not been proven to work. As far as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is concerned, it easy to see why it has been scientifically shown to help those with this anxiety disorder make progress.

Why CBT works for Agoraphobia and all other phobias:

The only way to overcome fear is by taking action, not by talking about it and reviewing why you have it. CBT is about ACTION.

"What kind of action?"

The action of CBT takes many forms.

One form of action is identifying the perspectives that encourage one's Agoraphobia. These perspectives, because they are false and only lead to fear, need to be changed. Working on changing these perspectives and seeing one's life experience differently is one form of taking action. For example, Agoraphobic thoughts tell you that you are trapped with no easy escape or without any help easily available. This then encourages a panic attack or leads to panic attack symptoms. However, CBT can help you shift your perspective in these anxiety producing moments, so that you realize you're in no present danger. This perspective shift is one aspect of the Cognitive Therapy piece of CBT.

Another form of action is the type that most associate with CBT. This is called Exposure therapy. In order to truly overcome Agoraphobia, one must face fear and anxiety. You might anxiously be asking, "But is CBT going to force me to face all of my anxiety at once?" CBT doesn't force anyone to do anything they're not ready and willing to do. Also, based on how quickly an Agoraphobia sufferer is ready to move forward, Exposure therapy is best done gradually. Each step builds confidence as one begins to face panic attack symptoms and situations they have been avoiding. Taking action in this way is empowering and a great confidence booster. Once you begin, you'll see that progress can provide comfort with:

standing in lines,
being stuck in traffic,
being on a crowded elevator,
driving out of your comfort zone,
being alone without a support person . . .

and all the other classic symptoms of Agoraphobia you thought you could never face. More importantly, once your brain adapts to your anxiety provoking stimuli (your scary, anxious situations), it will no longer trigger the fight or flight response and adrenaline surge that encourage panic attack time!

Agoraphobia, though involved, is just like any fear. And fear can be conquered!
www.KickFear.com

For many, public speaking can be a nerve rattling proposition. If you get nervous or experience anxiety when giving a speech or in any form of public speaking, you are not alone. In fact, fear of public speaking is one of the most frequent anxiety issues around.

Why Is Speech Anxiety and Nervousness In Public Speaking So Common?

There are a variety of reasons, but one of the most reasonable explanations is that we are social beings and care about how others perceive us. Part of this concern is healthy. Unfortunately, for millions of people, the concern has reached an unhealthy level. They worry too much about being evaluated and lend too much importance to public speaking performance. This then leads to anxiety or even a phobia.

So, in order to assist those with speech and public speaking anxiety, here are:

5 Ways To Overcome Nervousness and Anxiety in Public Speaking:

1.) Focus on what you can give to the audience, not on your performance.

When you focus on how you're presenting to the audience and what you are doing wrong, you're moving away from the reason you're speaking to the audience - To give them something. Focusing on your performance creates anxiety.

2.) Over prepare.

Unless it's an impromptu speech, prepare well so that you remove anxiety about forgetting the material. Also, being prepared inspires confidence.

3.) Practice presenting in front of a pretend audience at home.

Practice presenting as if you are speaking to the most critical, hostile audience you can. That way, when actually giving your speech, you'll be ready and aware that this real audience is friendlier and less difficult.

4.) Maintain a realistic perspective.

People don't care as much about your performance as you think they do. They just want the information. And if you can give it to them with a smile and engaging explanations even better.

5.) Find a public speaking role model and imitate them.

Role models are guides for behavior we wish to cultivate. Search for a model at work, in the media or even in your social circle. Ask yourself how and why this person appears so comfortable. How do they engage an audience? How do they carry themselves? Then act accordingly.

Of course, these tips are for more mild fears and anxiety symptoms in public speaking. If you find that your speech and public speaking anxiety is severe, seek treatment from a doctor specializing in anxiety.
THE Questionby Dr. Craig April, Director of The April Center For Anxiety Attack Management - Los Angeles
www.KickFear.com

Here is a vital question to ask yourself if you suffer with phobias, o.c.d. and any other form of anxiety:

"What am I truly afraid of?"

I'm not talking about the content of your fear or anxiety. For example, I'm not talking about your fear of panic attacks, your fear of driving, a blood phobia, agoraphobia, fear of germs, fear of flying, obsessions or really any piece of anxious subject matter or content.

What I'm talking about is what you're really truly afraid of. Often times, when anxious, one can get lost in the content of their anxiety and lose sight of or not even know what they truly fear anymore.

When we know what we truly fear, we can set the stage to confront the content and anxiety symptoms that have become a barrier. Working through whatever anxiety plagues you then becomes easier.

For example, what do many with social phobia truly fear? Is it really just parties or social gatherings or meeting someone that may reject or criticize them? Or is it ultimately a fear that they'll be alone? Looking beneath the fear of rejection is a powerful process.

For those with o.c.d., if we look beneath the content of obsessions about germs, contamination, sex, harm, etc. , what we often find is fear of loss, of being alone, and of death. In fact, fear of death or that which people equate with death, such as loss of family, loss of control, and loss of identity is often the foundation of all fear!

THE IMPORTANT ANXIETY QUESTION:

The question: "What am I truly afraid of?" is one that is most often asked in our anxiety therapy support groups. As part of group treatment for o.c.d., social anxiety or panic attacks, honest discussion of each member's fear is encouraged. This exploration enables members to confront their anxiety in a safe, supportive atmosphere which can move them towards anxiety relief.

When battling anxiety with or without an anxiety doctors assistance, it is always a mistake to focus entirely on content. In other words, when anxious, most tend to focus on fighting thoughts about their particular anxiety. Unfortunately, this can increase anxiety because trying to control anxiety by forcing it away can unintentionally create more!

Therefore, asking yourself The Question above can circumvent the natural tendency to fall into the anxiety trap of battling the story in one's head - rather than really looking at what supports it.

So, the next time you're struggling with anxiety symptoms, practice taking a deeper look at the real foundation of your fear. And then begin working on shifting the perspective that holds that faulty fear foundation together.

Treating anxiety, OCD and panic attacks with songs? Though music is not a panacea, it can certainly help. Studies have shown that music can boost mood, reduce stress, assist us with expression and be restorative. Plus, music can be so inspiring! I think we all can attest to having at least one experience where a certain song made us feel like we could take on any problem or challenge.

And yet, we often forget to turn to music in times of need.

Well, this post has been written to be a reminder. What better time to use music as a tool for coping and inspiration than when caught in the throes of anxiety? www.KickFear.com

Agoraphobia and panic attacks have a special relationship. In fact, one might say they often go together like peanut butter and jelly - just not in a nice way!

It is often the case that Agoraphobia is a byproduct of an ongoing struggle with panic attacks - creating what is known as Panic Disorder.

But just what is Agoraphobia? There are many misconceptions. For example, one is that it is a fear of open spaces. This can be a symptom, but one I have rarely seen over the years. Another misconception is that it is a fear of leaving your home. Agoraphobia can result in this fear, especially in the most severe cases, but this is not the definition.

So what is it then?

Agoraphobia is truly defined by a fear of being trapped in a setting that one feels there is no quick escape or help immediately available. Generally speaking, those with this fear have a panic attack in these situations.

Because this fear can be triggered in a multitude of contexts for those that suffer, it is called a complex phobia.

Here is a list of common Agoraphobic fears and symptoms:

- Difficulty driving out of one's comfort zone away from home. Those with this phobia often have a certain radius in which they feel comfortable and do not travel beyond it easily or at all.

- Difficulty in crowds, including crowded concerts, sporting events and movie theaters. Sitting in the middle of a row is usually avoided.

- Difficulty being away from home without their labeled support person, often a spouse or family member.

- Fear of flying focused on feeling trapped in an enclosed space with no easy escape. For similar reasons, fear of traffic, fear of elevators, fear of being on a bus, and fear of driving over bridges are also common. For some, Agoraphobia can be triggered during weddings, after ordering in a restaurant, on a rollercoaster and while seated in class at school.

- When confronted by an agoraphobic fear, a panic attack can occur. Interestingly enough, a panic attack is often the precursor to developing Agoraphobia. Due to a fear of having another panic attack, one can begin to fear experiences where they cannot escape from quickly, in the event of panic. For these reasons, panic attacks and Agoraphobia can become inextricably linked. That said, even if panic attacks devolve into Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia is not always an issue. So, Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia can also be their own separate diagnoses.

No matter what form these symptoms take, help is available in the form of anxiety treatment provided by specifically skilled anxiety doctors. Relief is often experienced following Cognitive Behavioral Therapy provided by these specialists. This therapy is not traditional talk therapy. It is structured, focused on the present and provides clear cut strategies/tools to overcome anxiety. It is highly collaborative, which means the anxiety doctor you choose should be verbally engaging.

You can break free of Agoraphobia. Being limited or, GASP!, house-bound does not have to be your reality. Seek help and live life!
www.KickFear.com

OCD Treatment is known by the anxiety doctors who provide it and the OCD sufferers who have entered it as "counter-intuitive".

This means that proper OCD treatment is not the kind of therapy that focuses on simply being positive and addressing the past events of childhood. How could it be? When people are suffering with anxiety, obsessions and compulsions that are wreaking havoc on their personal and professional lives, they need fear-facing help. Not false assurances that, with conversation, their suffering will disappear with the arrival of insight.

To truly overcome fear, anxiety and OCD obsession, one must FACE it. You must look it in the eye! This doesn't sound very positive to many. But, no one has ever successfully faced fear by running from it or trying to pretend it's not there. You can't go around it, under it or over it, either. You've got to go through it!

And that's the beauty of proper OCD treatment provided by expert anxiety doctors and specialists. The specific evidence-based CBT treatment provided has far-reaching effects. Facing fear can be the most profound and meaningful action you will ever experience.

However, the treatment itself is not focused on warm fuzzies much of the time (though anxiety doctors should be kind and engaging). For example, for those that fear panic attacks, would a therapist repeatedly addressing theories about the relationship between current anxiety and childhood have an impact ultimately? Sure, it sounds interesting in the moment, but it does so little to change one's current experience of anxiety. The only way to overcome anxiety, obsessions and accompanying compulsions is to face fear. This is true for all areas of anxiety.

Purposely experiencing what one fears does not sound very positive. But, things in life are often not what they seem. OCD treatment focused on facing fear in the form of an external situation or internally generated by thought is ULTRA-POSITIVE. Why? Because, as you learn tools and techniques, your confidence grows. You begin to feel empowered while taking small steps towards breaking free. Conversely, not facing fear directly is dis-empowering, discouraging and creates the experience of imprisonment.

In summary, anxiety and "OCD" obsessions and compulsions can be overcome with proper OCD treatment in the form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Unfortunately, most therapists believe that traditional talk therapy focused on addressing unresolved past conflicts can treat all diagnoses. However, anxiety disorders such as, OCD, phobias, social anxiety, panic attacks and panic disorder require evidence based CBT treatment provided by specialists.

Making progress just takes a little motivation and commitment to living a life with more freedom and peace.

You can move beyond fear and anxiety. It can be done. So . . . take . . . that . . . first . . . step! You're stronger than you think.
